Country Mice :: Morning Son (video)

Although I forgot to add it on my favorite albums of 2011 the Country Mice debut “Twister” was indeed a favorite record of mine this past year. Here is their first ever music video which compiles images of my favorite theme: Life on the Road

On the footage…Frontman Jason Rueger told American Songwriter, “The video is compiled of footage that was shot on our last tour, It’s us seeing a lot of these cities for the first time, capturing the moments in between shows. Our friend Gordon Holmes edited it together and wove it into a narrative within the context of the song.”

One of the raddest tunes around…

While browsing the aisles today at Reckless Records, I came across a rockabilly/surf/garage section. I could sort through this specific category of vinyl half the day and all night inhaling dust and getting lost in warm nostalgic album art. Once I got back home, I decided to buy the Allah-Las debut 7 inch record while my mind was still vibing on garage/surf tunes and sure enough the first pressing was sold out (for good reason). Bummer. Dig on this track if you have never heard it, it is certainly a track that can take over a night.

Damien Jurado // Maraqopa

Maraqopa out 2/21

Damien Jurado – Museum of Flight

Seattle singer-songwriter Damien Jurado will release his new album, ‘Maraqopa’, on February 21 from the fine folks over at Secretly Canadian. The album was produced by HD favorite Richard Swift. This record looks promising given the track above and the other tastes I have sampled.

Enjoy a couple of classic videos below that are HD staples by Damien.

Damien is overseas for awhile but for you Chicago friends, check out his tour stop on 5/16.

Day Joy // Harmon Drive Mailbag

Hooked on this tune from Day Joy. Day Joy is Michael Serrin and Peter Michael Perceval. Their Bandcamp site states “Day Joys music began from friendship and humble beginnings writing on the porch late at night in dreamy Orlando FL. It moved into the living room where it has developed into the lush and layered recordings you hear now with the help of some modest recording equipment and a little bit of liquor.”

HD Mailbag // Introducing The Record Company

The-Record-COmpany-SUper-Dead
Think of a dark, smoke-filled, hazy, beer joint layered with vibes of rambling guitar and lyrics describing the darkness of a night gone wrong. This is the scene I envision when I listen to these songs from The Record Company. I have found myself enjoying these on repeat courtesy of the Harmon Drive Mailbag. These tunes are made for the weekend, and made for getting into trouble. Highly recommended…

Old Soul via the HD Mailbag

I have been too busy lately to take time to share new music with you good people. This past week, Old Soul shared their LP on Bandcamp and I have been thoroughly impressed. An easy, flattering comparison would be one of my favorite bands Vetiver. Below are three of the tunes that stood out to me. Name your price for all the tunes here.

Townes // Dead Flowers

Van Zandt died on New Years Day 1997

Townes Van Zandt – Dead Flowers

One of the greatest songs ever in my opinion. Townes is an appropriate artist to kick off 2012 considering he died on New Years Day in 1997. Viva!

Can you get to that?

Stone Darling – Can You Get To That

About two years ago to the date I dropped this gem by Sleigh Bells where they take a sample from Funkadelic’s Can you get to that. It put the original version of the song on the radar for a lot of people including myself. Two years later, the talented Stone Darling is putting their own spin on the same Funkadelic tune. Scoop this song for free. Let me know in the comments if you dig.

My favorite song of the year 2011

It was not an easy task to pick a favorite song of 2011 nor did I plan on attempting the task. But, after seeing Alabama Shakes perform 3 times in as many days I feel compelled to share the love. Every time I hear this band I get goose bumps and feel the raw emotion that is poured in to every track. The lyrics of the song Hold On, especially the excerpt below, speak to the wild times I have survived and to the unknown that lies ahead. When I contemplate the infinite possibilities of what is in store in 2012 the opportunities have never been more promising, for myself, and for this friendly crew from Athens, Alabama.

Bless my heart.
Bless my soul.
Didn’t think I’d make it to 22 years old.

…I don’t know where I’m gonna go, don’t know what what I’m gonna do.

Go and buy the EP for $4.

Cotton Jones // Egg on a Sea

At about 1:20 this song gets real. Cotton Jones is responsible for Paranoid Cocoon which is one of my favorite records in my collection. Gone the bells is the jam on that album. This tune above is from Sit Beside Your Vegetables, a 4 song EP that was released this past February.
