An Interview with El Camino Real

El Camino Real's Big Red Barn

By: Chris Parish

In a big red barn forty five minutes north of Los Angeles there is something special happening. That is where El Camino Real records their music and invite their friends to join in on the jam sessions. When I spoke over the phone with Jen and Ainsley of El Camino Real, Jen had just woken up from a nap but was quick to perk up when we started talking about their music. The two have been dating since they met seven years ago. This is impressive considering Jen is 21 and Ainsley is 20.

Using a keyboard, guitar, bass, tambourine, and anything Jen can pick up and entertain people with El Camino Real supplies music for you to dance to. Jen mentioned Joni Mitchell as a big influence and Ainsley added King Crimson, for their “crazy, psychedelic, epic jams”. El Camino Real has played several venues in California including Java Joes, Rock City Studios, and other spots around Ventura where the other members live.

When I asked them about how it was being in a band with the person you are dating Jen replied, “Most people are surprised when they find out, because we are not your typical couple…”

She could not be more accurate with that statement. El Camino Real’s “I Saw You” reminds me of the Rolling Stones painted with MGMT. “I Saw You” is sure to be a tune that will get the room talking.
