Talking with Field

By: Chris Parish

At the age of nine, Spencer Berger, the lone member of the band Field was singing in the opera with the Metropolitan Opera’s Childrens Chorus. A family friend convinced his parents to let him try it out so he did for three years. Hailing from Queens, NY he has not been to Chicago since a Guided by Voices show a couple years back when Guided by Voices played their last show ever. Nonetheless, I sat down with Spencer over the phone briefly and I was impressed with his friendly nature and gifted voice. He has spent the last 5.5 years in L.A. and that is where he has recorded his album Be Brave.

Spencer has recorded the entire album by himself in L.A. using his own recording equipment and is spending these days mastering and fine tuning these recordings. Take a listen to “I’m the enforcer” and you can feel that opera influence.

Spencer felt that bravery was a theme for these recordings and following through with something until the end has always been important to him. Spencer is in the process of assembling a band so that he can begin to tour. Spencer explained to Harmon Drive, “If you can spend your time doing something you love to do, it does not get any better than that.”
